Sophia Powell has been named Te Awamutu Junior Rugby Sub-Union’s first female, and third overall, life member.
The Te Awamutu Junior Rugby Sub-Union bestowed nomination of Powell was unanimously passed and accepted at last month’s annual general meeting. * This paragraph differs from the print version.
The 2022 New Zealand Marist rugby personality of the year said it came as a “big shock”.
I had no idea this was on the cards for the junior sub-union,” Powell said. “I’m really pleased that the volunteer work I’ve done has been recognised at that level.”
She has been involved with the junior sub-union since 2018 and has held an executive position since 2020.”
Powell is moving slowly away from her role as her boys are now at St John’s College.
“It’s definitely not about the accolades for me – but I must be ‘young’ to be joining the ranks for life members,” she said.
Many took to Te Awamutu Marist Junior Rugby’s Facebook post to say the honour for the “superstar” and “TA legend” was well deserved.
Proud mum Denise Powell was also among those to post a tribute.
The junior sub-union said Powell had sat on the committee for approximately eight seasons giving her time to not only the Te Awamutu Marist Junior Rugby Club but also to others in the Waipā area and Waikato Central Junior Rugby.
“Sophia is always willing to put herself forward and has been involved in such roles as a weigh delegate, Power Farming and treasurer, to name just a few and helps out wherever she can to benefit junior rugby.
“She continues to do so even after her children are no longer involved in junior rugby.”
