School hit
Te Awamutu Primary School has again been the victims of a burglary. The caretaker’s shed has been broken into. The school posted details on social media on Monday asking if anyone saw people around Teasdale Street early Sunday morning with two small chainsaws and a red fuel can.
On the trail
Planning is underway for a repeat of this year’s Waipā Creative Trail. Co-organiser, ceramic artist Alex Wilkinson told The News the call for a repeat was coming from participants and visitors. She said a conservative estimate of visitor numbers was around 700.

A carved pou created by Ngāti Korokī-Kahukura and Ngāti Hauā and including wood from the stump of a tōtara tree felled during construction of the entrance to Fonterra’s $85 million Wai Mahea water treatment plant at Hautapu was unveiled early yesterday (Wednesday).
Speed limits
New speed limits will be introduced to Waipā roads following response to community feedback and a 6-week consultation process. Intersection Speed Zones (ISZs) will also be installed in four locations in Waikato so when approaching traffic is detected at an intersection, electronic signs show a temporarily lowered speed limit.
Roading awards
Projects futureproofing Hamilton Airport and connecting roading for a major residential development were recognised last week at the Waikato Civil Contractors New Zealand Hynds Construction Awards 2026. Work completing the final section of Whatukooruru Drive in Peacocke, southern Hamilton, won Schick Civil Construction the Supreme Award.
