Te Kawa-based Tate Burdon is 12 – and he is already looking forward to his third BMX World Championships.
New Zealand has lined up 285 riders to compete in the Sleeman Sports Complex in Brisbane later this month – involving 351 entries across the 47 challenge and cruiser classes which include men and women from eight to 50-plus.
The Year 8 Korakonui School student is part of the Hamilton BMX Club and qualified for the world event via the 2025 New Zealand National Championships in Invercargill.
Mum Anne and dad Hamish will be juggling calving on their dairy farm but are looking forward watching their son compete in Australia.

“Plate collection is July 16 so we will fly in on July 15 with racing July 22-25,” Anne said.
Tate will race in the 12-year Boys Challenge (20-inch) and 8-12-year Boys Cruiser (24-inch) categories.
Currently ranked 16th in the UCI World Championship standings, Tate is Challenge NZ4 and Cruiser NZ2.
“Tate knows what it takes to compete at this level and although the training and preparation are never easy, he knows putting in the effort will help him place as highly as he can,” Anne said.
Tate has ridden the track previously at the 2024 and 2026 Oceania Champs.
