Morgan confirmed as new Waipā councillor

Dale-Maree Morgan

26 June 2023 – 4pm

Dale-Maree Morgan has been confirmed at Waipā District Council’s new Māori ward councillor.

All votes in the Waipā Māori ward election have now been counted. Morgan secured 124 votes ahead of Bill Harris [91 votes], Gaylene Roberts [77 votes] and Barney Manaia [18 votes].

Waipā mayor Susan O’Regan said she expected Morgan to be a strong voice at the decision-making table.

“I think it’s particularly good to have a young, strong voice around the table. Dale-Maree will bring a different perspective and I really welcome that. I very much look forward to working with her.”

Morgan will be formally sworn in at her first council meeting on Friday (June 30). She replaces Takena Stirling who resigned from Council in March this year.

23 June 2023 – 1.25pm

Progress results indicate that Dale Maree Morgan is on track to be Waipā District Council’s new Māori ward councillor.

As at this afternoon, Morgan had secured 102 votes ahead of Bill Harris [73 votes], Gaylene Roberts [66 votes] and Barney Manaia [14 votes].

Only 10.77 per cent – 255 people – of the 2368 eligible voters returned their papers by 9.15am today in marked contrast to October’s election when 23 per cent – or 548 voters – participated.

Progress results are based upon around 80 per cent of the vote being counted. Any special votes, plus votes in transit to the processing centre, are not included in this tally.

Final results are likely to be released on Monday, June 26. The new councillor will be sworn in at the Council meeting on Friday, June 30.

All updates to the results.
