New street names for Waipā

Waipā council has approved several new street names in the district.

The road in a new subdivision at 93 Whitmore Street in Kihikihi will be called Te Koko Lane.

Developer Papamoa TA Ltd Partnership consulted with Kate Searancke of the Ngāwaero hapū of Ngāti Maniapoto who agreed to the name as it was the surname of Ngawaero, the wife of William Searancke who carries the name of the hapu.

When the street sign is put up, Searancke said it would “be nice to be there” so kaumatua could bless it.

In Pirongia, the Van der Sande family proposed the name Clydesdale Lane for its development at 1/1375 McClure Street and consulted with Huapai Puke (Ngāti Apakura and Ngāti Hikairo) as the mana whenua representative.

Finally in Te Awamutu, ZB Homes consulted with Hazel Wander (Ngāti Apakura) and agreed to Arahanga Lane at its 727 Alexandra Street development.

Arahanga means a bridge/join between two more accesses as in the right of way.

Land Information New Zealand has pre-approved the proposed names, which means that there are no similar, or similar sounding, names in the vicinity of the development and emergency services will not be adversely affected.
